Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, spent much of last year battling an unspecified form of cancer. Thankfully, she announced in January that her cancer was in remission, and she has since slowly returned to royal duties.
On Wednesday, Kate broke her silence about her difficult cancer recovery. She made it clear that just because her treatments have ended, it does not mean that her cancer journey is over.
Kate Discusses Her Cancer Recovery
Kate, 43, travelled to Colchester Hospital in Essex on July 2. She went there to spend time in a specially designed well-being garden that gives patients, NHS staff, and visitors a place to relax. During her time there, Kate got more candid about her cancer journey than she ever has before.
“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment,” Kate said. “Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”
“You’re not necessarily under the clinical team any longer, but you’re not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to,” she continued. “And actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that sort of phase that comes after treatment, I think is really valuable.”
Kate went on to say that this is “life-changing” for both the patient and their families.
“You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a roller coaster, it’s not smooth, like you expect it to be,” the mother-of-three concluded. “But the reality is you go through hard times.”

Kate Is Lucky To Be Alive After Cancer Battle
Kate’s cancer was discovered after she underwent abdominal surgery in January of 2024. She then spent much of the rest of the year undergoing cancer treatments at the Royal Marsden Hospital.
Earlier this week, insiders spoke out to say that Kate’s cancer battle was far more serious than the public was led to believe.
“I can say that, from what I understand, she is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery,” said the Daily Mail royal correspondent Rebecca English.
Sources close to Kate said that she went “to hell and back” while fighting cancer. She even had a semi-permanent “port” installed in her chest. It was through here that her cancer treatments were administered.
“On some levels I actually think this is a good reminder that she was really seriously ill last year and underwent a significant period of chemo,” said one insider. “As anyone who has been through that experience will tell you, you can feel very unwell for a long time afterwards. It can take years [to recover].”

Kate Takes Return To Royal Duties Slow
The grueling nature of Kate’s cancer battle is the reason that she has been taking things slow when it comes to returning to her royal duties.
“She wants to find the right balance and work with a greater degree of flexibility than before,” the source explained. “This is a woman who plays a very important role in the monarchy [as Princess of Wales and future Queen], but in order for her to do it, both now and in the future, she needs to get this right.”
We’re glad to see that Kate appeared to be in such good spirits during her visit to Colchester Hospital today. She continues to be an inspiration to millions around the world through the way that she handled her cancer battle with such dignity and strength.
