Matthew McConaughey has been one of the most A-list stars in Hollywood for decades. Despite this, he and his wife Camila Alves have chosen to raise their children in Texas, far away from the craziness of Hollywood.

In a new interview, McConaughey is revealing that leaving Los Angeles was actually his plan all along.

Texas ‘Has Always Been Home’ For McConaughey

“This has always been home, there are multiple reasons for that,” McConaughey, 54, said while appearing on the Today show on Thursday morning.

McConaughey went on to say that he likes the slower pace of Texas.

“This is where I have a great relationship with time,” he gushed. “Meaning 60 seconds feels like a minute, a mile feels like a mile. I like to live in a place and for a home to be a place where I have a good relationship with time.”

McConaughey, who was born and raised in Uvalde, Texas, then said that his “family unit is here” in the Lone Star State. This includes his 92-year-old mother and his two older brothers. That’s partly why McConaughey always planned to raise his own family there when it came time to have children.

“I wanted them to have what I grew up around,” he explained. “There’s a solid… amount of common sense that runs through it, it’s untalked about, but we understand it here.”

McConaughey concluded by saying that he values the “resources” and the “backbone of security” that Texas has to offer. Check out his full comments on this in the video below.

Alves Talks Texas Life

McConaughey and Alves have been married since 2012. They are parents to three children: Levi, 16, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11.

Earlier this year, Alves opened up about what raising her children in Texas has been like for her.

“It’s been great,” Camila, 41, told Fox News of Texas life. “It really embodies our belief system, especially the ones I grew up with, like going to church every Sunday, saying ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no, sir.’ I grew up saying those things coming from a family of farmers.”

“For me, being from Brazil and then coming to Texas, I discovered a lot of similarities in terms of what families practice here, especially going to church on Sundays, and being very into the outdoors,” she continued. “It’s been a great transition.”

McConaughey And Alves Were Miserable In California

Alves was born and raised in Brazil, but she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to launch a successful modeling career. In this interview, however, she went on to say that she and her husband were miserable when they lived in Southern California.

“We lived in Malibu for many years and having the paparazzi outside our door every day – every single day – when that becomes your normal, you don’t realize how much that’s actually affecting the things you do until you actually leave and get out of it,” she stated. “The kids get to have a private way of growing up. So from that perspective, it was very important.”

We’re so glad to see that McConaughey and Alves have found happiness in Texas! In the end, we can’t say we’re surprised to learn that life in the Lone Star State is much better than it is in Hollywood.

We hope McConaughey and his family enjoy many more years of Texas life to come!
