Back in November, we reported that the comedian Ellen DeGeneres had fled America and moved across the world to the United Kingdom. In the months since then, DeGeneres has been laying low in England with her wife, Portia de Rossi.

Now, DeGeneres has been hit with a heartbreaking blow months after making this move.

DeGeneres Gets Heartbreaking News

DeGeneres, 67, has taken to Instagram to reveal that her and de Rossi’s beloved rescue dog Augie has passed away. They adopted him over a decade ago, and he was one of their three dogs.

“We had to say goodbye to Augie yesterday,” DeGeneres wrote. “We rescued him 12 years ago and he was so grateful. He gave us so much love. He will be missed. There will never be another like him.”

DeGeneres penned this caption alongside a slideshow of photos of Augie, who was a Beagle-Chihuahua mix. Most of the photos show Augie at the $32 million Montecito, California mansion that DeGeneres sold in 2024.

DeGeneres Thanks Fans For Their Support

DeGeneres returned to Instagram days later to thank her fans for their “kind messages about Augie.” She wrote this alongside a video of herself and de Rossi with Augie that was recorded one month ago. In the video, Augie was sleeping in de Rossi’s lap as DeGeneres talked about her skincare line, Kind Science By Ellen

“Thank you for all of your kind messages about Augie,” DeGeneres wrote in the caption. “We filmed this last month and planned to post it today.”

“I don’t care what Portia says, please don’t call me the Deal Queen,” she continued. “We love you, Augie.”

de Rossi, a 52 year-old actress best known for starring in the comedic TV series Arrested Development, has yet to comment publicly on Augie’s death. Unlike DeGeneres, de Rossi does not have an active presence on social media.

Aside from Augie, DeGeneres and de Rossi are dog parents to a Poodle-Maltese mix named Kid and a purebred Poodle named Mrs. Wallis Browning. They also have two tuxedo cats named George and Chairman. In 2020, they lost both a cat named Charlie and a dog named Wolf.

DeGeneres Flees America

DeGeneres and de Rossi shocked everyone back in November, when it was reported that they’d fled America to move to England.

“Ellen was in England house hunting in the beginning of October,” a source told People Magazine at the time. “She ended up finding a house that she loved and purchased it shortly after.”

In March, DeGeneres officially cut ties with America when she sold her last property in the U.S. She and de Rossi have since settled in a multi-million dollar farmhouse in the Cotswolds, a celebrity hotspot. The Cotswolds is a rural area of Southwest England that is located around 100 miles from London.

Other stars who call Cotswolds home include David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Hurley, Jeremy Clarkson, and Damien Hirst. King Charles himself even owns property in the area!

Why DeGeneres Left America

A source close to DeGeneres previously claimed that the comedian chose to flee America because of all the “ill will towards her.” This stems from her infamous toxic workplace scandal.

“Ellen really felt she had made her mark on the industry, but that was diminished when she was cancelled over her alleged treatment of her staff,” this insider told Daily Mail. “Then to have celebrities call her out one by one was so hurtful.'”

“For Ellen, it’s easier to move away from her problems than to confront them,” the source continued. “It seems like a sad end to what she once was in people’s minds.”

Many celebrities pledge to leave America for a variety of reasons. However, DeGeneres is one of the few who has actually followed through.

While we may not agree with DeGeneres on much, we can certainly sympathize with her over the death of her dog Augie. We can only hope that DeGeneres can take solace in knowing that Augie is in a better place now!
