It’s just been revealed that the former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres sold her mansion in Montecito, California last month to move to England with her actress wife Portia de Rossi of Arrested Development fame.
Speculation has abounded about the reasons she seemingly packed up and skedaddled as fast as possible. Now, the truth behind this move has been revealed.
DeGeneres Moves To England
This move to England may seem sudden to fans. However, it seems that DeGeneres, 66, and de Rossi, 51, have been planning it for quite some time.
“Make no mistake about it. This is Ellen and Portia’s retirement,” a source close to the couple told Daily Mail. “Neither one of them have any projects lined up.”
The insider went on to say that DeGeneres’ infamous toxic workplace scandal played a major role in her wanting to leave the country.
“Ellen really felt she had made her mark on the industry, but that was diminished when she was cancelled over her alleged treatment of her staff,’ the source explained. ‘Then to have celebrities call her out one by one was so hurtful.'”
DeGeneres’ Toxic Workplace Scandal
This comes two years after DeGeneres’ eponymous talk show went off the air following nineteen seasons. It also comes four years after DeGeneres found herself embroiled in a toxic workplace scandal on the set of the show.
DeGeneres was accused of being “mean” and presiding over a work environment that was demeaning to employees. Specifically, DeGeneres’ workplace was allegedly full of racism, bullying, and sexual misconduct. It was also claimed that DeGeneres’ employees were told to never make eye conduct with her around the office.
This was a huge blow to DeGeneres’ image, as she famously ended every episode of her talk show by telling her viewers to “be kind” to one another.
“With all the ill will towards her, she was looking to move away even before the election,” the insider continued. “She has the one person that still loves her, Portia, and she is ready to leave everyone who in her mind left her hanging out to dry. If she considers it her retirement, so be it.”
The source added that when it comes to DeGeneres, many Americans are “turned off by her persona, which some perceived to be fake in the wake of the work place allegations.”
“For Ellen, its easier to move away from her problems then to confront them,” the insider concluded. “It seems like a sad end to what she once was in people’s minds.”

DeGeneres and de Rossi have moved to Cotswolds, a rural area of Southwest England. Located around 100 miles from London, the area is popular among celebrities.

Last week, DeGeneres and de Rossi were spotted visiting Jeremy Clarkson’s pub in Cotswolds. DeGeneres looked unrecognizable, shockingly ditching her trademark blonde hair. Instead, she sported a brunette look as she enjoyed a drink with her wife.
