Back in November, we reported that the comedian Ellen DeGeneres had fled America. She then moved across the world to the United Kingdom. DeGeneres has since been laying low in England with her actress wife Portia de Rossi of Arrested Development fame.
Now, DeGeneres is speaking out to finally reveal the real reason that she made this move.
DeGeneres Reveals Why She Left America
On Sunday, DeGeneres took part in a live conversation with the British broadcaster Richard Bacon in the English town of Cheltenham. There, Bacon asked if Donald Trump’s presidential victory played a role in DeGeneres’ decision to leave America.
“Yes,” replied DeGeneres, 67. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.'”
DeGeneres went on to gush about her love for the United Kingdom.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”
“It’s clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here,” DeGeneres continued. “We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
DeGeneres concluded by making it abundantly clear that she’s not happy with the current state of America.
“I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences,” she lamented. “So until we’re there, I think there’s a hard place to say we have huge progress.”

DeGeneres Flees America
Fans were stunned when it was revealed back in November that DeGeneres had fled America to move to Europe.
“Ellen was in England house hunting in the beginning of October,” a source previously told People Magazine at the time. “She ended up finding a house that she loved and purchased it shortly after.”
After DeGeneres and de Rossi fled America, they settled in a $15 million farmhouse in the Cotswolds, a celebrity hotspot. The Cotswolds is a rural area of Southwest England that is located around 100 miles from London.
Other stars who call the Cotswolds home include David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Patrick Stewart, and Elizabeth Hurley. King Charles himself even owns property in the area.

DeGeneres’ Toxic Workplace Scandal
This comes after a difficult few years for DeGeneres. Indeed, her reputation in America took a massive nosedive five years ago when her toxic workplace scandal was exposed to the world.
DeGeneres was known as “The Queen of Nice” for decades. That all changed in 2020, when her toxic workplace scandal exploded. Indeed, DeGeneres was accused of presiding over a workplace at her talk show that was full of racism, sexism, and bullying. It was even alleged that her own staffers were told to never make eye contact with DeGeneres.
The backlash against DeGeneres was swift. Her eponymous talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show came to an end in 2022 after 19 seasons, yet the “hate” for DeGeneres kept pouring in.
“The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news,” DeGeneres said last year. “The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
This is partly why DeGeneres decided to flee America and move to England.
“Ellen really felt she had made her mark on the industry, but that was diminished when she was cancelled over her alleged treatment of her staff,” a source told Daily Mail back in November. “Then to have celebrities call her out one by one was so hurtful.”
Many Hollywood stars have threatened to leave America over politics. DeGeneres is one of the only ones who actually put her money to her mouth is and followed through with it.
Given the negative perception of DeGeneres in America, perhaps leaving really was the best decision for her. In the end, America might just be better off without Ellen DeGeneres!
