Sinead O’Connor’s Estate Demands Trump Stop Using Her Music

The estate of the late Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who died in July of last year at the age of 56, has issued a demand that the former President Donald Trump stop using her music at his campaign events.

O’Connor’s Estate Issues Demand

Yahoo News reported that last month, Trump played O’Connor’s hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U” at a campaign event that he held in Maryland. O’Connor’s estate has since spoken out to say that she “would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted” to see that Trump had done this.

“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards her fellow human beings,” O’Connor’s estate told BBC News. “It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his political rallies.”

“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil,'” the estate continued. “As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump, and his associates desist from using her music immediately.”

Other Artists Make Same Demand Of Trump

During the February 24 Maryland campaign event in question, Trump also used the Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” He is currently the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, setting up a potential rematch with Joe Biden later this year.

Variety reported that other artists who have demanded that Trump not use their music at campaign events include Adele, Aerosmith, the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Guns n’ Roses, Leonard Cohen, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Nickelback, Ozzy Osbourne, Panic! at the Disco, Pharrell Williams, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, R.E.M., Rihanna, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Village People and the White Stripes.

Back in January, Johnny Marr of the Smiths expressed his fury that Trump used his song “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” at a campaign event.

“I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass,” Marr wrote on social media. “Consider this s*** shut right down right now.”

O’Connor’s Death

Fans were devastated when O’Connor’s family announced her death at the end of July last year.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” they said in a brief statement. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor’s cause of death was later revealed by a United Kingdom coroner.

“This is to confirm that Ms. O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death,” the coroner told Entertainment Weekly, adding that “no further comments will be made” on her passing.

O’Connor had been struggling with her mental health in the wake of the 2022 death of her son Shane.

“There is no point living without him. Everything I touch, I ruin. I only stayed for him. And now he’s gone,” she said afterwards, later seeking help at a hospital.

While we hope that O’Connor is finally at peace, we also can’t help but think that it’s rather ridiculous for her estate to demand that Trump not use her music at his events. In the end, Trump still stands a very good chance of being reelected later this year, whether he uses O’Connor’s music or not.
