The entire world is in mourning today after the legendary Queen Elizabeth passed away on Thursday at the age of 96. Now, new details about the monarch’s final days have come to light.
The Queen died “peacefully” at her Balmoral home in Scotland, where she spent her final months. A source recently opened up about how the Queen spent what turned out to be her last days this summer.
“It’s been a very typical and jolly summer at Balmoral, lots of walks and picnics and BBQs,” the source told The Express. “It has followed the pace long set by the Queen and the late Duke of Edinburgh. Obviously the Queen hasn’t been present throughout but she has taken part and been seen.”

The Rt Rev Dr. Iain Greenshields, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland who spent last weekend with the Queen at Balmoral, said that she was “full of fun” and was the “life and soul of things,” having dinner with Her Majesty on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. It was a “great shock” to find out that she had passed away just a few days later, he said.
“It was a fantastic visit. Her memory was absolutely amazing and she was really full of fun,” Greenshields revealed. “It came as a great shock to me when I heard she was gravely ill because she was in amazingly good form over the weekend. She was the life and soul of things.”
“She was speaking very personally to me about her time there way back when she was a child, she was talking about her horses from the past, naming them from 40 years ago, people’s names and places,” he continued. “She was quite remarkable.”
Another royal source who saw the Queen just a few days ago said she seemed to be in “genuinely good spirits,” implying that her decline in health was very sudden.
“I know you would expect me to say that but she really was,” this source told Daily Mail.
However, another source said that concern for the Queen was growing behind the scenes.
“They were already heavily pacing her and warning people that it had now come to the point that if she needed to do X, she couldn’t do Y, and that engagements were the exception not the rule,” this insider claimed. “But there has been an unmistakable shift in the strength and urgency of talks in recent weeks.”
“It had become abundantly clear to everyone that, while mentally agile, she physically wasn’t up to the strain of the role and there have been serious discussions about what duties she would, if at all, be able to discharge,” the source further declared. “The mechanics were already being drawn up to ensure the Prince of Wales could take over most of her day-to-day responsibilities.”
On Tuesday night, a royal source said, “It doesn’t look like the Queen will be returning from Balmoral in October. Everyone at Windsor is deeply worried about her.”
Just two days later, Her Majesty passed away.
In the end, those who love the Queen can draw comfort in knowing that she spent her final months enjoying the simple country life that she loved. As the world continues to mourn her, we can all know in our hearts that she is at peace, and that she’s in a better place now.
