Valerie Bertinelli’s Bitter Divorce Could Cost Her $50K A Month

Valerie Bertinelli of “One Day At A Time” fame is currently in the midst of a bitter divorce from her estranged second husband Tom Vitale. Unfortunately for her, this divorce has taken a turn, as Bertinelli has been forced to ask for a separate trial for the prenup that Vitale is contesting.

Bertinelli’s Bitter Divorce Takes A Sad Turn

Daily Mail reported that Bertinelli, 62, has filed court paperwork asking for a separate trial for their prenup that they signed in December of 2010 which could stall their divorce proceedings. Earlier this month, Vitale asked to be awarded $50,000 per month in spousal support and $200,000 in legal fees, but Bertinelli fired back by saying that their prenup has a “waiver of temporary and permanent spousal support.”

Bertinelli married Vitale on New Year’s Day in 2011, and she separated from him in November of 2021 citing “irreconcilable differences” before filing for divorce officially in May.

Last week, Bertinelli filed a thirteen-page request in court to bifurcate her marital status from financial issues in her and Vitale’s divorce. In the papers, she said that she is hoping for “an early and separate trial on the issue of validity of Premarital Agreement.” Her attorneys argued that a bifurcation could “assist the parties to achieve settlement of remaining issues.”

Bertinelli Struggles With Divorce

Bertinelli, who was previously married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until they divorced in 2007,  has been open about how hard this latest divorce has been for her, describing it as slow and painful in her book “Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.”

“We have drifted from the interests that made us a couple and found that those differences can’t be fixed,” she wrote. “He is a good man who is going through many of the same issues that I have faced: What can he do to add meaning and purpose to his life? Where can he find joy? What is he passionate about? What has he learned? And what does he do differently going forward? The paths we thought we were on changed.”

In an emotional interview with “Today” last month, Bertinelli broke down as she revealed that she is not open to finding love again after this divorce.

‘I Have Some Trust Issues’

“I have some trust issues,” Bertinelli said as she began to cry. “I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone.”

When asked would ever look for love again, Bertinelli replied by saying “Oh God, no” before going on to say that she “can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past.”

“Divorce sucks,” she continued as she said she never imagined that she would be divorced twice someday.
