The former “One Day At A Time” and “Hot In Cleveland” star Valerie Bertinelli, 62, broke down in tears on Thursday morning while appearing on the “Today” show as she revealed that she’s not open to dating again after she filed for divorce from her husband Tom Vitale, 58, who recently asked her for spousal support.

‘I Have Some Trust Issues’

“I have some trust issues,” Bertinelli said as she became visibly emotional. “I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone.”

Daily Mail reported that Bertinelli was married to the late rocker Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until 2007. She was then married to Vitale from 2011 until they separated last year.

“I am gonna be more happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” she said today of her latest divorce.

Bertinelli went on to clarify that she’s not completely alone, as she has “six cats and my dog and my son, and hopefully one day grandchildren.”

Bertinelli ‘Can’t Imagine Ever Trusting Anyone Again’

When asked if she plans to ever look for love again, she replied, “Oh God, no.” She added that the reason behind this is that she “can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past.”

Bertinelli also said that she never imagined that she’d be divorced twice.

“Divorce sucks,” she said bluntly.

Despite divorcing Van Halen in 2007, the two formed a close friendship that lasted until his death in 2020. Bertinelli said today that “love” is what helped her get through his passing.

“Love always wins no matter what, even when they’re gone,” Bertinelli said. “There’s still that love there to be grateful for that you had.”

Bertinelli’s Body Image Issues

In her interview this morning, Bertinelli also became emotional as she discussed her body image issues.

“I haven’t stepped on the scale since I finished writing the book,” she said, referring to her memoir “Enough Already.” “I’m looking at the monitor and trying not to judge myself too harshly right now because I know that I’m still holding on to this weight because it’s protecting me because I’m going through a lot of challenges, a lot of heartbreak, a lot of crazy stuff going on in my life right now.”

Bertinelli went on to say that she’ll only start to try to lose this “protection” weight once she has taken care of her mental health.

“I know this weight is protecting me right now, and when I get healthier internally and emotionally that weight will come off,” she said. “Because I know I’m treating my body better. I’m drinking less alcohol, I’m eating less sugar, I’m putting more vegetables in my body, but my body is doing this for a reason … because it needs protection.”

“And I’m not the only one going through these challenging times, we’ve all been through so much,” Bertinelli continued. “I’m not the only one. And I’m not here to say, ‘oh, poor me.’ I’m here to say that when we reach out to people we love, or strangers even, that we don’t have to feel so alone in this world and go through it alone.”

It’s clear that Bertinelli is going through a very difficult time right now. Please join us in saying a prayer for her as she continues to deal with her divorce and other struggles.
