The Von Trapp Children Reunite To Surprise Julie Andrews

The legendary Julie Andrews got the surprise of her life on Thursday night when the five surviving former child stars who played the Von Trapp children in the 1965 classic The Sound of Music reunited to sing “Do Re Mi” to her.

You’ll see the touching moment when they surprised Andrews, who began to sing along with them, in the video below.

Fox News reported that Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Duane Chase (Kurt), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Debbie Turner (Marta), and Kym Karath (Gretl) walked the red carpet at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles for this event honoring Andrews, who of course played Maria Von Trapp in the iconic film.

Sadly, Charmian Carr and Heather Menzies-Urich, who portrayed Liesl and Louisa von Trapp, were missing from the event. Carr tragically died of complications from dementia at the age of 73 back in 2016, while Menzies-Urich died of brain cancer at 68 one year later.

Christopher Plummer, who starred as Capt. Georg von Trapp, died last year at the age of 91 two weeks after suffering from a fall that resulted in trauma to his head.

Andrews Presented With Award

Andrews, 86, was presented with the AFI Life Achievement Award by her old friend Carol Burnett.

“This award is so very much deserved,” Burnett said. “She has constantly given us her all. And her ‘all’ is awe-inspiring. Congratulations, chum.”

Andrews then took the stage to graciously talk about all the people who have helped her in life.

“This night reminds me with great clarity how many people are involved with making movies,” she said. “What a huge collaborative effort it takes to bring film to the screen.”

“My husband Blake never liked when people referred to filmmaking as the business or an industry,” she added. “He insisted that film was an art form and should always be called that. And I know that is exactly the way the AFI feels also.”

Andrews was married to director Blake Edwards for 41 years before he died back in 2010.

Angela Cartwright Praises Andrews

Angela Cartwright, who played Brigitta in “Sound Of Music,” previously gushed over Andrews in a 2018 interview.

“I loved her,” she said at the time. “We all did. You can kind of tell in the movie. We totally enjoyed her. She embraced us right from the very beginning. She sang to us in between takes and we would dance.”

“She just did Mary Poppins so she would sing all these songs from that film,” Cartwright recalled. “I mean, you can really tell that we adored her. She’s such a talent. She has such an amazing voice and it really was a great experience.”

Cartwright went on to say that the entire cast has remained close in the decades since they made the movie.

“It’s fascinating because sometimes you make a movie and you don’t really see each other anymore or stay in touch,” she explained. “But we’ve all stayed in touch. We’ve certainly gotten together for celebrations and reunions.”

“Whenever we lose a cast member, it always feels like we lost a family member,” she concluded. “We all know what’s going on in each other’s lives and we’ve continued to do that during the 50-plus years [since filming].”

What a touching moment to see all the Von Trapp children together again honoring Andrews! This was certainly a reunion that none of them will be forgetting anytime soon.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
