Bill Cosby’s civil sexual assault trial has started, with jury selection beginning after he was accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at the Playboy Mansion back in the 1970s.

Cosby Goes On Trial Again

Opening statements are set to begin at Los Angeles Superior Court on June 1. Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt said that the former “Cosby Show” star will not be appearing at this trial, however.

“He does not have to be present in a civil matter,” Wyatt told People Magazine. “Since he is 100 percent blind with glaucoma and the COVID numbers are going up, we just don’t want to take any chances.”

Wyatt went on to say that Cosby is confidant about how this trial will turn out.

“He feels he is in capable hands,” Wyatt said. “He feels he will experience the same vindication he experienced in Pennsylvania. The jurors will pay attention to the facts of this case and they will make their decisions without any prejudice towards him.”

“We do believe he will be vindicated and he will be able to move on with his family and continue to provide humanity and humor to the world,” he added.

Claims Against Cosby

Judy Huth claims that she was only 16 when Cosby allegedly molested her in a bedroom at the Playboy Mansion. She alleges that she met Cosby when she and another teenage friend were watching the filming of a movie in a San Marino park in Los Angeles. Huth claims Cosby approached the two of them and asked them to sit with him, before inviting them to a tennis club, where he “served them alcoholic beverages” while they played billiards.

After giving the girls multiple alcoholic drinks, Cosby allegedly told them that he had a “surprise” for them, and then brought them to the Playboy Mansion. Huth claims that he told them to say that they were 19 if anyone asked.

Once inside, Huth told Cosby that she needed to use the restroom, and he sent her to one that was located in a bedroom suite. When she was finished, she came out to find Cosby was sitting on the bed, and he allegedly told her to sit with him. Her complaint alleges that he then proceeded to sexually molest her without her consent.

Statute Of Limitations For Criminal Case

While the statute of limitations has expired for a criminal case, victims of underage sexual abuse can file civil lawsuits decades after the alleged incidents occur.

Cosby has been accused by dozens of women of drugging and sexually assaulting them, and he was released from prison in June of last year after serving three years for the alleged 2004 sexual assault of Andrea Constand. While he was initially convicted of this crime, his conviction was ultimately overturned.

It remains to be seen how this civil case against Cosby will turn out.
