Eccentric Hollywood star Jim Carrey announced on Thursday night that he is “probably retiring” after footage resurfaced of him forcibly kissing Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone, who was 20 at the time, as she presented him with an award. Social media users are accusing Carrey of committing “sexual assault” against the young actress.
Jim Carrey had been quick to slam celebrities attending last weekend’s Oscars for giving Will Smith a standing ovation after he slapped the comedian Chris Rock, saying that he was “sickened” by what he saw.
He’s likely regretting commenting on this at all, however, as it only resulted in his own past coming back to haunt him.
Daily Mail reported that social media users are branding Carrey as a “hypocrite” after the above clip from the 1997 MTV Movie Awards resurfaced. In the clip, Carrey can be seen taking the stage to collect his award from Silverstone, only to grab the back of her head and kiss her “forcibly.”
In another clip from this same award show, Carrey can be seen trying to kiss Will Smith, who was 28 at the time, after he was named as the winner of the Best Kiss award. As Smith made his way to the stage to accept the award, Carrey grabbed him by the neck and stuck his tongue out towards his mouth. Smith reacted by trying to push him away.
You can check out that clip below.
Social media users have gone on the attack against Carrey in the wake of these clips resurfacing:
This all came about after Carrey had blasted Hollywood as being “spineless” for giving a standing ovation to Smith despite him slapping Chris Rock the morning after the Oscars.
“I was sickened by the standing ovation,” he said. “Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.” His comments while on CBS Morning can be seen in the tweet below.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time the comedian’s integrity has come into question. Back in 2020, Jim Carrey came under fire for remarks made to a female reporter while promoting Sonic The Hedgehog

On Thursday night, as the backlash against him over his resurfaced clip continued, Carrey revealed that he may be retiring.
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey, 60, told “Access.” “I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Carrey went on to claim that he wants to explore other passions besides acting.
“I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life,” he said.
We are all, unfortunately, very well acquainted with Jim Carrey’s passion for “art”. Frankly, it’s nearly impossible choose which of his works is most offensive. All of the below are certainly in the running:
However, the timing of this certainly suggests that he may see the writing on the wall after this latest controversy. Seems we’ll all find out soon enough if Jim Carrey’s days of working in Hollywood are finally over.
