New Mexico Makes Ruling On Alec Baldwin Shooting Accident

The state of New Mexico has closed its investigation into the incident on the set of Alec Baldwin’s film Rust. The New Mexico Occupational Health & Safety Bureau concluded its investigation by levying the maximum fine allowable by law, $139,793, on the film’s production company. 

The investigation stemmed from an incident where actor Alec Baldwin accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin shot Hutchins while she showed the actor where to point a prop gun believed to contain a dummy round of ammunition. 

Included in the report were details showing the crew of the film ignored multiple industry safety standards for handling firearms on set. The saddest of all was that numerous crew members alerted the producers and director of unsafe working conditions on the day of the incident. Essential safety awareness and firearms best practices could have prevented this tragedy.

Baldwin Says He Is “Exonerated” 

Reacting to the report and the fines, Alec Baldwin is claiming victory. The actor, who held the gun as it a went off, said through a representative:

“We appreciate the report exonerates Mr. Baldwin by making clear that he believed the gun held only dummy rounds,”

While Baldwin was listed as a producer on the film. However, the report states Baldwin’s only duties were limited to decisions about the script and casting. Baldwin as a producer, had no control over safety standards and

“…had no authority over the matters that were the subject of the Bureau’s findings of violations, and we are pleased that the New Mexico officials have clarified these critical issues.”
