WrestleMania Preview: Edge vs. AJ Styles

Happy WrestleMania week, folks! This week, we will break down all twelve planned matches/segments. We will dive into the backstory, if you should care, who will win, if it’ll be a good match, and if we can expect any WrestleMania-style surprises?

The word “dream match” is the most abused term* in all of wrestling, but I think you can say that AJ Styles and Edge meeting for the first time at WrestleMania falls into that category.

Also, I love that they’re bringing back the motion graphic fight cards.

The Backstory

After weeks of begging for someone to challenge him, AJ Styles answered Edge’s call to face off at WrestleMania. But the earnest Edge faded as the Ultimate Opportunist Returned with a violent conchairto on the Phenomenal One.

Edge has done most of the lifting for the build for this feud. With his cryptic promos, references to former gimmicks, and new music, Edge has left as many questions as answers as to what he has planned for AJ Styles.

Ever since his return, Edge has done a great job of referencing his old self and how it informs his older persona.

The “Who Cares?” Scale

In another year, this bout would have been the main event. Edge and AJ are two of the best to do it, but the sheer volume of matches has eclipsed their tangle on the Grandest Stage Of Them All. I expect this to be a good match, but I wish it had more attention.

I give this 3 cares out of 5.

Who Will Win

I hope that this is the beginning of another big run for Edge. I would love for him to have another shot at the title.

I don’t think either wrestler “needs” the win either, as both aren’t going in one direction or the other. Edge seems satisfied in his part-time role, and I think him going back every once in a while for a big match is a good move for his career preservation and health.

Will This Be A Good Match?

Yes. But there’s potential for it to turn sideways. Edge tends to have long matches, and sometimes they can go a bit dry. Thankfully with two nights of WrestleMania, everyone will have plenty of time to tell their stories in the ring. I think Edge and AJ are in the top 10 of all time, and if given time and good pacing, they could easily have the match of the night.

Wild Card Prediction?

I have a feeling that this could be a cinematic match. I’m basing this hunch on nothing, and I don’t think WWE would do one in front of a live WrestleMania audience, but it wouldn’t be surprising if there were some more theatrical/filmatic elements. This is undoubtedly the only match on the card where those touches would make any sense.

What do you think? Are you excited for Edge vs. AJ Styles? Let us know in the comment section below.

*and boy, are there a lot of overused words in wrestling. I could go on and on, but that’s for another post.
