On Thursday, a major tragedy occurred in Hollywood when the star Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun that tragically killed 42 year-old cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Now, the daughter of martial arts cinema legend Bruce Lee, whose son Brandon was killed in a similar on-set incident while shooting The Crow in 1993, has broken her silence to address this tragic event.

Bruce Lee’s Daughter Shannon Tweets About Alec Baldwin Prop Gun Incident

“Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period,” Shannon tweeted from her brother’s Brandon Bruce Lee tribute account.

Alec Baldwin’s prop gun incident occurred on the set of the film Rust in New Mexico on Thursday.

“The entire cast and crew is absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy. We send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones,” a representative for Rust Movies Productions said.

“The film has halted production for an undetermined period of time. We are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation.”

Accidental Shooting Of Bruce Lee’s Son Brandon On The Crow Set

This was an eerily similar incident to the one that killed Brandon Lee on the set of the movie The Crow back in 1993.

While filming a scene, Brandon was struck by a bullet that was mistakenly not a blank. He passed away at the age of 28.

The incident was particularly devastating because Brandon seemed destined to follow in his father Bruce Lee’s footsteps to stardom.

His father also passed away at young age two decades before. Enter The Dragon star Bruce Lee was just 33 when he died on July 20, 1973 in Hong Kong.

There has long been speculation about the untimely death of Brandon Lee while filming The Crow. More on that in the video below:

Alec Baldwin Shooting Reinvigorates Need For Prop Gun Safety

Since prop guns are subject to strict safety standards these days, nobody knows at this time how exactly Hutchins’ death happened.

“Typically we will do a safety brief with the cast and crew,” prop master Joseph Fisher told CNN. “We’ll let them examine it, we’ll explain safety precautions that go with each type of prop weapon. In this case [the “Rust” incident], it was a blank firing weapon and with that there are inherent risks.”

Fisher added that while there is no “bullet” in a prop gun, there are still projectiles that include gun powder and gas, which can be dangerous within a certain range.

Ben Simmons of Bare Arms, a British company that works with firearms on sets, explained that a variety of “prop guns” can be used in TV and film productions.

He explained that blanks are not necessarily safe “because if you were to get in the way of that or get too close to it, lots of dirt and debris can get thrown out the end of the gun, and that can cause harm.

It’s extremely rare for it to happen and it’s even rarer for it to cause death.”
