Over the weekend, it was reported that the names “Rachel Meghan” had been removed from the mother section of the birth certificate in June 2019 of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie. Now, Meghan is claiming that Buckingham Palace “dictated” her to have these names removed.
Reports came out on Saturday that the names “Rachel Meghan” had been removed from the birth certificate. And, that is was Meghan who made the request.
Now, it reads as “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.” This had previously been thought to be a nod to the late Princess Diana with her preferred name, “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales.”
However, a spokesperson for Meghan has since told Daily Mail that “the change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by the palace.” It was not a request Meghan made.

The spokesperson added that it was “offensive” for anyone to suggest that Meghan wanted to be “nameless” on her own child’s birth certificate.
“The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials,” the spokesperson said. “his was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex.”
“To see this UK tabloid and their carnival of so-called ‘experts’ chose to deceptively whip this into a calculated family ‘snub’ and suggest that she would oddly want to be nameless on her child’s birth certificate, or any other legal document, would be laughable were it not offensive,” the spokesperson added.
The change was initially spotted by Lady Colin Campbell, who said, “It is extraordinary and raises all kinds of questions about what the Sussexes were thinking.”
Dickie Arbiter, the Queen’s former press secretary, added, “Maybe this was an early part of their plan.”
It is unclear why exactly this change was made, but royal expert Robert Jobson stressed to Insider that changing the birth certificate in this way is just “normal practice.”
“Meghan’s title is HRH The Duchess of Sussex, and therefore that is what her name is,” he said.
Buckingham Palace did not respond when asked for comment.
It was also recently reported that it is unlikely that Meghan will join her husband Prince Harry when he returns to the United Kingdom to see his family over the summer. A source close to the couple is urging people not to take this as a snub.
“It should be strongly stressed that there is still an element of uncertainty about this because of the unpredictable Covid situation, but the understanding is the duke is more than likely to come back on his own,” the source said. “This is a personal and practical decision by the couple, but it would certainly help officials navigate what is likely to be a fairly tricky situation.”
It’s been one year since Meghan and Harry shocked the world by stepping down as senior royals and moving across the world to California. It remains to be seen whether the rumored rift between them and the royal family has actually healed after all.
