Britney Spears’s father is speaking out through his attorney, Vivian Thoreen, following the release of a New York Times documentary that’s now streaming on Hulu. Framing Britney Spears has thrust father and daughter back into the spotlight.
An online #FreeBritney movement has been drawing attention to Britney’s case because many believe her father is manipulating her.

However, James “Jamie” Spears is denying that he is controlling his pop star daughter.
While the real villain of the documentary is the media, the Spears patriarch also has a cloud of suspicion over his head.
But, Thoreen claims the situation is not how it appears and that Jamie is a loving father who saved his daughter’s life.

Britney’s Conservatorship
When Jamie became the conservator over his daughter’s estate in 2008, she had $2.8 million in the bank despite that she earned tens of millions of dollars annually.
His attorney claims this highlights that people had been taking advantage of her financially. Under Jamie’s control, Britney is now worth $60 million.
At that time, Britney’s psychological downfall was well documented in the tabloids.
Paparazzi followed her everywhere in hopes of catching pictures of video of her acting erratic.
Britney was in crisis mode and she was put under a conservatorship with her father in charge of her financial and personal affairs.
He is no longer in charge of her personal affairs as of 2019.
Spears is currently is a co-conservatorship with Bessemer Trust over his daughter’s estate.
Thoreen said in an interview with Good Morning America:
“I understand that every story wants to have a villain, but people have it so wrong here. This is a story about a fiercely loyal, loving, and dedicated father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. People were harming her and they were exploiting her.”
“He has collaborated with her to help her regain custody of her children. He has brought her finances back from disaster,” she explained. “And he’s created a safe environment for her to live her life the way she wants, away from the media that cause her so much pain.”
Britney Spears Quarantined With Her Family
Britney’s attorney has recently stated that she wants her father removed as conservator and that she feels threatened by him.
But, Jamie’s attorney states that Britney has never said that to him.
The mega-star even quarantined with her father and the rest of the family at the beginning of the pandemic and never expressed a concern or desire for change.
“Early on in the pandemic, they spent two weeks with other family members, hunkered down in Louisiana, and they spent a lot of time together,” the attorney said. “Britney and Jamie went on long drives together. They played and worked in the family garden. And every night, Jamie cooked Southern comfort food that the family ate and enjoyed together.”

“In that time, Britney never expressed those words to her father,” Thoreen stated. “She’s never asked him to step aside.”
Britney, who is active on Instagram, has never posted anything asking for her father to be removed as her conservator.

Attorney Claims Jamie Spears Is Not Controlling Britney
Thoreen portrays Jamie as a father who continues to help his daughter and allows her to make decisions.
A judge has continued to keep him as conservator, understanding the importance of his position in this role.
Thoreen explained to GMA:
“Britney makes decisions all the time. If she wants to perform, if she wants to record an album, if she wants her name and likeness used, or if she just wants to live her life like a normal person, Jamie collaborates with Britney to make that happen.”
