Bubba Wallace NASCAR ratings Trump

NASCAR star Bubba Wallace reacted to a chart on Twitter that showed last weekend’s NASCAR race at Foxwoods Resort Casino as the top-watched sporting event of the weekend. Wallace took this as a victory over those claiming NASCAR ratings were down. That includes President Donald Trump who recently took at a swing at NASCAR and Bubba Wallace on Twitter.

But, as it turns out, the joke is on Bubba.

NASCAR Ratings Show Viewership Is Actually Down

Unfortunately for Wallace, however, the victory lap was premature.

While NASCAR may have topped this one chart, the number of viewers tuning in has plummeted in the wake of NASCAR banning the Confederate flag and catering to Black Lives Matter.

Just 2.21 million people tuned into the race at Foxwoods last weekend. That is a serious downturn from the 2.79 million who tuned in to the same race in 2019.

After months of having no sports to watch amidst the coronavirus pandemic, one would think that NASCAR ratings would be higher than ever. Especially with many of us stuck at home.

But it seems that racing fans don’t like being lectured about politics by overpaid drivers like Bubba Wallace while they enjoy the sport they love.

Trump Calls Out NASCAR And Bubba Wallace

This just goes to show that President Trump was on point when he tweeted last month that NASCAR ratings would suffer because of Wallace’s antics.

“Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!” Trump tweeted.

Bubba Wallace’s Noose Scandal

Trump was of course referring to Wallace’s claim that he was a victim of a hate crime. The No. 43 Chevy Camaro driver alleged that a noose was put in his garage before a race.

In response, the FBI launched an investigation into the alleged hate crime.

Their investigation found that the noose was actually a rope used as a garage door pull that had been there for months. Long before Wallace was ever been assigned to that specific  garage.

His hate crime allegation hit just as politics swept over not just NASCAR, but the NFL, MLB, and NBA as well. Even NHL players are kneeling now.

There was once a time when American sports could be an escape from politics. And the rest of the evils of the world. But those days are sadly now gone.

If NASCAR wants people to start watching their races again, perhaps they should tell Bubba Wallace and other “woke” racers to focus on the sport and keep their personal politics out of it.

I for one, would be the first to tune in if NASCAR returns its focus to a love of racing.
