Details On Drake Maverick’s WWE Return, NXT Superstar Ignored

Details On Drake Maverick’s WWE Return

The WWE made headlines with a series of releases earlier this year, including parting ways with Drake Maverick.

Maverick, a 37-year-old from England, released an emotional video the day of his release following a nearly three-year run with the WWE.

On the latest edition of WWE NXT, though, Maverick returned, “officially” signing a new contract presented to him by Triple H.

Maverick remained in the interim cruiserweight title tournament that he was in during his release, scoring wins over Tony Nese and Kushida to advance to the finals where he lost to El Hijo del Fantasma.

Despite all that, Maverick was offered a new NXT contract.

According to a report by Fightful, Maverick knew of the contract ahead of time.

“Drake Maverick knew about the renewed WWE contract ahead of time — it wasn’t a surprise. It was unclear to those we’ve heard from when WWE decided to go this route with the story,” the report stated (thanks to Ringside News for the quotes).

Maverick is a former six-time holder of the WWE 24/7 title and also won the TNA X-Division title twice during his time with that promotion.

NXT Superstar Ignored

Cameron Grimes appeared set to become a big name in WWE’s NXT after joining the promotion. But that has yet to come to fruition.

Grimes, a 26-year-old from North Carolina, was trained by Jeff and Matt Hardy and is a former three-time Impact X division champion and TNA world tag team champion.

However, his run in NXT has yet to really take off as many expected when he signed in 2019 after leaving Impact Wrestling.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Grimes is “not even high on their priority list.”

“Well, they didn’t beat him, but look, he’s not high on the — he’s not even on the (TakeOver) card so he’s not that high on — if he was on the card on Sunday it would be one thing, but he’s not even high on their priority list,” Meltzer said.

Grimes went on a strong win streak before a loss to Matt Riddle. This past February, he challenged Keith Lee for the North American title before falling.

Following the loss to Lee, Grimes scored a victory over Finn Balor thanks to Damian Priest distracting the former WWE Universal champion.
