When you work in the professional wrestling industry, the moves you use are everything; whether you work for WWE or AEW. This does not escape Brian Cage and Lacey Evans either, as both stars are currently “fighting” on social media about their characteristic moonsault.
On social media, a fan called out Brian Cage for using Lacey Evans’ moonsault. However, Cage quickly returned with a comeback, as he has been using the move for many years.
Cage posted a wrestling video from his time at Lucha Underground. In it, he does the move fans claim he’s stolen from Lacey Evans.
In other words, Cage showed he did the move years before Evans did. But, the feud did not stop there!
In the discussion, Cage readily admitted that he did not invent the move. In fact, the man behind the move is none other than Marc Mero, who dubbed it “The Merosault”.
So, it seems that Marc Mero is the true mastermind behind the move, a wrestler with an extensive WWE background. He was also a boxer, which he included in his wrestling gimmick in the nineties.
While the original “discussion” took place between a fan and Cage, Evans took to Twitter a little while later to respond. In it, she made it clear she never claimed The Merosault as her own.
Props to Evans for staying in character and giving a classy response. Of course, this does not mean that fans are not adding fuel to the fire.
From what we could tell on social media, the attack came from Cage’s camp, even though Evans did not claim the move was her own. Of course, she could not help retweet a fan who said she does it better.
Let us be honest. Wrestling moves are used and recycled more than cardboard in the average American household. Of course, Lacey and Brian work for big promotions, so this is getting a lot more attention than it should.
When you look at the argument on Twitter, it is easy to see how this all started. Cage defended himself and his lenghty indie career, but failed to see that the comments did not come from Evans herself.
Evans on the other hand, did not start the feud nor did she really add fuel to the fire. Aside from the cheeky comment, she has not done much to ignite the flames of rivalry.
It looks like a big misunderstanding at this point, but it does not put Cage in the best light. While defending himself was certainly needed, the attack on Evans – even though she did nothing – was not needed.
At the end of the day, The Merosault is used by a countless number of wrestlers these days. Charlotte Flair, Lacey Evans, John Morrison and Brian Cage are just some of the wrestlers that use the iconic move.
So, now the inventor of the move is known, the discussion can hopefully be put the rest and we can go on enjoying our wrestling week?
