UFC Florida: Walt Harris Releases Emotional Statement, Following Stoppage Loss to Alistair Overeem

Walt Harris was unable to secure a victory in his much-discussed bout with Alistair Overeem at UFC Florida. But, the heavyweight contender was humble in defeat, despite the tragic circumstances that were tied to the fight.

Harris releases emotional statement

The 36-year-old Harris was fighting for the first time since his step-daughter Aniah Blanchard, was murdered last fall. Early on, it looked like Harris was going to record the biggest win of his career, as he had Overeem in all sorts of trouble.

But, the legendary heavyweight survived round one, and eventually stopped Harris in round two with a headkick and follow-up punches.

After the card, Harris shared out the statement below.

First let me thank @alistairovereem for sharing the octagon we me tonight… You’re a class act brother and a legend! Tonight wasn’t my night, but you best believe I will be back better!

Thank to everyone for all your love and support can’t say it enough! We learn and grow! Baby girl… daddy loves you and I promise I will keep pushing! #ForeverAniah????

What’s next for Harris?

Despite last night’s defeat, there’s no reason to rule out a title shot run for Harris. Prior to facing Overeem, he had gone undefeated in four straight fights. Saturday’s headliner could have gone his way, and if Harris (13-8-1) had won the bout, a top-five ranked contender likely would have been next.

With his ridiculous power and athleticism, Harris is a problem for anyone.

Overeem (46-18, 1 NC), meanwhile, was fighting for the first time since he was stopped by Jairzinho Rozenstruik in December. The 40-year-old has gone 3-2 now in last 5 bouts.
