NASCAR Starts Up Again May 17 With Seven Races In Eleven Days

NASCAR just made their fans very excited yesterday when they announced that racing will start again on May 17th with the first of seven races in eleven days. NASCAR is the first major sports organization after the UFC to announce a specific return date amidst coronavirus lockdowns.

NASCAR Resumes Racing At Darlington May 17

NASCAR will resume racing May 17 with a premier NASCAR Cup Series race without any fans in the stands. This first and most highly anticipated race will take place at historic Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.

The May 17 race will be the first of seven races across an 11-day span at two different race tracks throughout May.

“NASCAR and its teams are eager and excited to return to racing, and have great respect for the responsibility that comes with a return to competition,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer.

“NASCAR will return in an environment that will ensure the safety of our competitors, officials and all those in the local community.”

NASCAR Announces May Schedule Only

The racing schedule that was released only goes through May, and it opens with the May 17 race at Darlington, the oldest superspeedway in the United States.

“Darlington is one of the most iconic and historic tracks in the sport and will be a tremendous backdrop when NASCAR returns to racing,” said track President Kerry Tharp.

This will be followed by the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24th, marking the 60th time that the longest race on the NASCAR schedule will be held.

The North Carolina governor gave permission for the races to be held as long as health conditions in the area do not deteriorate.

“This has been a proactive effort to put our motorsports industry back to work and boost the morale of sports fans around the world, while at the same time keeping the health and safety of all who will be on site the top priority,” said Marcus Smith, president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports.

Smith then added, “sports fans around the world need this, a return to some sense of normalcy with live sports on TV, and NASCAR is uniquely positioned to deliver it from a competition standpoint.”

NASCAR suspended their season on March 13 after completing just four out of 36 races that were scheduled for the season.

They have since pledged to complete their schedule for the year. This news is sure to delight of millions of fans who are eager to watch some high speed entertainment.
