Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is no longer on the WWE roster.
According to a report by Dave Meltzer, Velasquez was released as part of a series of budget cuts. The pro wrestling promotion cut ties with several superstars recently in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The 37-year-old Velasquez captured the UFC heavyweight title for the first time back in 2010 when he finished Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. His first – and only – WWE angle also involved Lesnar, facing him this past October in Saudi Arabia.
Velasquez signed his contract after a run with AAA, a Mexican pro wrestling promotion. He needed surgery after the signing, which prompted a short match vs. Lesnar.
A former college wrestling standout, Velasquez joined the American Kickboxing Academy gym upon beginning his MMA career. His last official fight came in 2019 when he lost to Francis Ngannou, retiring from the sport upon joining the WWE.
