Dominick Reyes has made it clear he wants to fight Jon Jones again, and recently he questioned whether the light-heavyweight champ could be avoiding a rematch. Well, if the dangerous fighter was hoping his comments would fire Jones up and prompt him to take a second fight, so far, it looks like that didn’t work.
Reyes faced Jones at UFC 247 in February and pushed the renowned fighter to his limits. So much so, many people scored the first three rounds for Reyes, and therefore, the fight.
But, Jones emerged from the card with a unanimous decision. As a result, there’s been no shortage of calls for a rematch.
Reyes has been driving to lock-up a second scrap with Jones. But, while talking to MMA Junkie recently, the rising star said this.
“I know the UFC is on board,” Reyes said. “I know I’m on board. The issue is Jon right now.
He’s going to say he’s down online, obviously on Twitter. When he gets those contracts in front of him, he’s a little different. That’s where we’re at.”
“It was a straight dog fight, brother,” Reyes said. “The last fight was a pure dog fight. I don’t think he wants to do that again.
I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t think he wants these hands again. He doesn’t want to get in this dog fight with me. That’s where we’re at.”
Well, those comments got back to Jones, who recently tweeted out this response.
Now suddenly I’m afraid of a good dogfight? Pretty sure I walked him down for 25 minutes straight when we fought.
One thing about being the champion of the world, you got to search for fresh meat on every soil. I’m feeling like popping some ? in Poland, haven’t had that yet.
The comment about Poland is almost certainly a reference to Blachowicz, who is from that nation and is coming off a KO win over Corey Anderson. Since that win, Blachowicz has also been campaigning for a fight with Jones.
Now, if Jones outright refuses to face Reyes again, and demands a bout with Blachowicz, then the UFC could decide to go that route. But, right now, at least here in North America, it seems like there’s much more buzz for Jones – Reyes II.
As a result, you would think the UFC will look at booking a rematch. But, anything could happen.
The odds of the UFC going to Poland for a pay-per-view card anytime soon, however, with the coronavirus pandemic ongoing, seems very unlikely.
