Mel Max Brooks

Many Americans have been worried about older Americans during this current global pandemic. Hollywood legend Mel Brooks, along with his son Max, decided to use their platform and a little humor to emphasize the need for social distancing. After all, we wouldn’t America to lose comedy icons like Mel Brooks, Dick Van Dyke, and Carl Reiner. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting in on the action with a social distancing PSA featuring his mini horse and donkey.

Mel Brooks is an iconic filmmaker known for classic comedies like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. His son Max is a well-known author who clearly inherited the funny gene from his dear old dad.

Together they make an effective and hilarious public service announcement that reinforces the need to keep your space to protect the elderly and anyone at risk. While many of us might survive being infected, there are many people, like Mel Brooks and his buddies, who likely would not.

Protecting Mel Brooks, Dick Van Dyke, And Carl Reiner

“If I get the coronavirus, I’ll probably be OK, but if I give it to him, he could give it to Carl Reiner, who can give it to Dick Van Dyke. And before I know it, I’ve wiped out a whole generation of comic legends,” the younger Brooks says in the video. “When it comes to coronavirus, I have to think about who I can infect. And so should you.”

Mel and Max Brooks are separated by a large window. The glass shields the 93-year-old Mel from his son and any possible germs. The comical yet informative video PSA lasts approximately one minute and ends with the comedy legend shooing his son away to go home.

You can watch the Brooks Family PSA in the tweeted video below.

Mel Brooks isn’t the only aging Hollywood star to remind us to stay at home.

Many of us might think of Arnold Schwarzenegger as invincible, but even the Terminator is staying home. At age 72, Arnold considers his life at risk should he contract the virus.

Like the Brooks men, the former Mr. Universe showed his sense of humor by giving his miniature horse Whiskey and donkey Lulu in the PSA. The three of them are staying inside Schwarzenegger’s home together where they are protected from the virus.

Schwarzenegger’s message to stay home comes after California Governor Gavin Newsom asked people 65 and older and anyone with health concerns to self-isolate at home.

“The important thing is that you stay at home, because there’s a curfew now. No one is allowed out,” Schwarzenegger told his social media followers. “Especially someone who is, like, 72 years old. After you are 65, you are not allowed out of the house anymore in California. So we stay home and we eat here.”

“No more restaurants, forget all that. Public gatherings, restaurants, gymnasiums are out the window. We stay home,” he said as he fed Lulu and Whiskey carrots at the kitchen table in the tweeted video below. “We don’t do anything like that anymore here. We just eat with Whiskey and with Lulu, we have a good time, we get entertained. So much more fun.”

The CDC and countless officials are urging Americans to practice social distancing to help combat the spread of infection.

If Mel Brooks and Arnold Schwarzenegger can stay home during these turbulent times, we can too!
