Taylor Swift Scolds White House During Video Music Awards Speech

Taylor Swift finally gave in to pressure to get political and it’s been about as milquetoast as her music. The songstress used her time on the stage at Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards to advocate for an Equal Rights Amendment.

Taylor Swift’s VMA speech

“I just want to say that this is a fan-voted award,” Swift began. “So, I first want to say thank you to the fans because in this video, several points were made, so you voting for this video means that you want a world where we’re all treated equally.”

“Regardless of who we are, regardless of how we identify, at the end of this video there was a petition — and there still is a petition for the Equality Act, which basically just says we all deserve equal rights under the law,” she continued.

She certainly has her talking points down. Including the erroneous idea that there are Americans who do not enjoy equal rights in this country.

“And, I want to thank everyone who signed that petition because it now has half-a-million signatures, which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House.”

Equal Rights Amendment

The push for a revitalized Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) comes almost 40 years after the original failed to get adopted at the federal level.

Leftwing activists like actress Alyssa Milano and gun control advocate David Hogg have picked it up in the last year as an imperative.

The ERA offers no increased “equality” in the law. Women — as with everyone else — already have it.

The ERA simply adds another layer of protection surrounding specious topics like the repeatedly debunked “gender pay gap” that currently exists.

That Taylor Swift has picked up such a superficial issue talked up by far-left intellectual lightweights makes her speech perfect for the politically uneducated viewers of the VMAs.

White House petitions

The “We the People” petitions are a product of the Obama administration. Launched in 2011, Americans are able to start a petition on the White House website where others can sign it.

Getting over 100,000 signatures typically meant a petition was reviewed by policy advisers and a response issued. However, even the Obama White House didn’t respond to every petition that met the threshold.

If the Trump administration chooses to answer Taylor Swift’s call, it’s doubtful she’ll be pleased with the response.

When Donald Trump entered the 2016 presidential race, he was the most pro-gay rights candidate to ever run in a major party.

Then-Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both defended traditional marriage during their 2008 runs.

Of course, if an ERA was such an imperative, it’s a wonder Taylor Swift isn’t asking why the Democrats didn’t bother passing one when they controlled Congress and the White House prior to 2014.

Unfortunately, the days of Taylor Swift getting pushback or interrupted are long over. Where’s Kanye West when you need him?

Regardless of how lauded Swift’s speech at the VMAs is today, her most memorable moment will always be the time “Yeezy” stole the mic from her on stage.

Kanye West has repeatedly floated the idea of a presidential run. It will be interesting to see if the West-Swift cold and hot relationship will continue into a bid for the White House.
