CM Punk and Cody Rhodes

Speculation about CM Punk joining AEW has been all over the place. Cody Rhodes and Punk have admitted that AEW has interest in Punk. However, it now seems the deal has fallen in the water. In the same breath, Rhodes also stated he would not be surprised if Punk returned to the WWE.

CM Punk Prefers A Deal In Person

When Punk spoke to ESPNhe admitted he received an offer to join AEW through text message. However, he also stated he prefers to do deals in person – opposed to digitally – and hinted that this was the reason why he has held back on a deal with the new indie promotion.

“I always think if somebody wants to do business with me, they can come talk to me. Texting offers isn’t really a way to do good business, at least. It was texted through three people and an offer came in through text.”

Cody Rhodes Responds

Even though Cody Rhodes does not deny conversations have taken place with CM Punk, he did state that a member of the AEW team did meet with Punk in person. He also admitted to texting Punk, but did say there was no contract offer at that time.

In the same Twitter message, Cody Rhodes mentioned he would not be surprised if CM Punk returned to the WWE. Considering the history between Punk and the WWE, this would be major news indeed.

“I think he was misquoted. I know 1 of us had met with him in person, and yes I texted him plenty when we couldn’t connect on the actual phone, but not a contracted offer. I wouldn’t be surprised if he went back to wwe. Regardless, great wrestler & guy. Door is open if he wants it.”

If the statements from Cody are to be believed, Punk could still join AEW if he had an interest in doing so. That being said, it seems Rhodes is convinced CM Punk will eventually be heading back to the WWE.

During his stint in the WWE – and especially after – Punk was one of the most popular wrestlers since Stone Cold Steve Austin. His popularity came after his pipebomb statement directed at Cena and management, which surprisingly had a lot of truth to it.

Punk would eventually become disgruntled with the WWE and left in 2014. In his release request, Punk mentioned creative differences as well as health problems, which later led to a bunch of lawsuits against WWE doctors. Unfortunately, Punk was eventually fired on the day he married AJ Lee, a former WWE superstar and champion in her own right.

Will punk eventually return to the WWE? I don’t know. What I do know is that there is a hype around Punk ever since the pipebomb segment and his subsequent release from the company. If he does return, it must be handled carefully. Otherwise, the WWE could lose another legend and break any career Punk still has left.
