Is Ellen DeGeneres Leaving Her Show?

Ellen DeGeneres has addressed rumors and said she’s “torn” about keeping her daytime show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Running since 2003, her show has become a feel-good staple that Americans know and love. While she has extended her contract until 2020, Ellen wonders if she should focus her talents elsewhere.

“I love documentaries,” also mentioning that she’s “getting the itch” to do stand-up comedy again.

She added her wife, Portia de Rossi, wants her to relax more, but her brother “feels like this is a really important time to be on television too, to put out kindness and a voice that you don’t get to hear and see a lot.”

“I love doing the show and I also love doing other things,” Ellen says. She added, “There’s a movie I’m trying to make that was a very successful book that we’re working on right now.”

Her funny daytime show has brought Ellen back into the limelight after her beloved show, “Ellen,” was canceled in 1997.

Now known her heartwarming surprises and funny gags, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” has become a balancing act between her stand-up comedy special on Netflix, exploring documentaries with the Warner Bros./Ellen Digital Network (EDN). EDN has a new talk show series in the works as well.

Standup without politics

It is sad to hear that Ellen could possibly be leaving, considering she is one of few daytime talk show hosts that doesn’t regularly bring politics into the fold. She almost never uses her airtime to talk about politics, but she has announced that she will back whoever is the next Democratic presidential nominee.

By her own admission, “I’m political but I’m not the kind of person that’s going to talk about politics in standup.” However, she has had then-President Barack Obama as a guest on her show twice, once in 2001 and 2016.

Ellen declared in 2017 that President Trump is NOT allowed on her show. She said at the time, “He’s against everything I stand for.”

As the 2020 election draws nearer, Ellen has had several Democratic nominees on her show, including Cory Booker, Pete Buttigeg, and Beto O’Rourke.

Whatever her politics, DeGeneres has bent over backward for many people over the years and her generous heart is something we all can admire.
