ellen waffle house

James Shaw Jr shocked all of us when he disarmed a mass shooter at Waffle House, saving the lives of many people. He shocked us again with his humility at brushing off being called a hero and raising $220,000 to cover funeral costs for those who lost their lives at Waffle House that night. But, when he went on “Ellen,” Shaw was the one who was shocked when Dwayne Wade, his favorite NBA player, came out to meet him.

Wade gave Shaw quite a compliment when he said, “For me, when I sit down with my kids, and I sit down and talk to them about role models, who I want them to look up to, I’ll tell them to go look up James Shaw Jr. Thank you for being that man.”

When Ellen asked what Shaw what he hopes to come out of this situation, he said he wants better treatment for mental health issues. 1 in 5 Americans face mental health concerns and we aren’t doing enough about this. Shaw, who went to church hours after the shooting, continues putting other people before himself in a remarkable manner.

Dwayne Wade also wanted to give the Waffle House hero something to express his gratitude. Then, he handed over a large check with a large amount. Shaw was clearly touched that his favorite NBA star took the time to fly to the show to meet him and then was so financially generous.

Ellen DeGeneres also gave him a check for $20,000, bringing up the GoFundMe account that was set up for Shaw to $225,000. James Shaw has shown the country that he is a man of amazing character. It is so nice to see someone like him being appreciated.
