Jussie Smollett May Be Free Legally, But Tracy Morgan Isn’t Letting It Go

Prosecutors in Chicago may have dropped all the charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, but the public isn’t letting his transgressions be forgotten so fast. Notable African-Americans have picked up where the justice system left off and comedians are roasting Smollett at award shows and on late-night television.

Former “Saturday Night Live” alum and “30 Rock” cast member Tracy Morgan is just the latest to lambast Smollett for his allegations that two racists shouting, “This is MAGA country!” jumped him on the streets of Chicago in late January when the city was experiencing sub-zero temperatures.

All charges for the hoax were dropped against Smollett, but the public isn’t letting him off the hook.

On “The Tonight Show” this week, Morgan — who is set to appear in a story arc on the show “Empire” — told host Jimmy Fallon he didn’t believe Jussie Smollett’s story one bit and has his reasons.

“Contractually [the producers of Empire] gave me millions of dollars and contractually all I gotta do is not fake a hate crime,” Morgan joked.

When asked by Jimmy Fallon whether he believed Smollett’s story, Morgan immediately said no.

“First of all, racist people don’t be jumping nobody in the polar vortex,” he explained to a giggling Fallon.

“Racists don’t watch ‘Empire’,” Morgan went on. “It’s too cold. They’ll still be racist in the spring.”

Tracy Morgan isn’t the only comedian calling out Jussie Smollett’s hoax on stage.

Over the weekend, at the NAACP Image Awards, comedian Chris Rock went against the organizers wishes to not mention Smollett — who wasn’t in attendance but was up for an Image Award that night — and said he’d lost all respect for Jussie Smollett.

As much as the charges against Jussie Smollett being dropped shocked the city of Chicago and beyond, it’s fitting that Smollett’s fabrications, which were meant to sow further division and create outrage, are still being called out by the public and those with a wider audience, like Tracy Morgan and Chris Rock. Hopefully, Smollett’s humiliation will serve as enough of a deterrent for anyone in the future thinking about trying a similar tactic.
