Dean Malenko Leaves WWE After 19 Years, More On Goldust’s Release

– Dean Malenko is no longer with WWE, ending a 19 year run with the promotion. Sports Illustrated first reported the news and stated that Malenko left within the last few days. There is no word on what led to his departure, but there is speculation that it could have to do with WWE hiring several new producers in recent months. With the new additions, some of the older producers have been used less frequently.

Before joining WWE in 2000 as part of the stable The Radicalz, Malenko worked for New Japan Pro Wrestling, ECW and WCW. He was known for his technical wrestling and won several titles while an active superstar; including a run as WWE Cruiserweight Champion. By 2001, Malenko was phased off of TV and took a backstage role with WWE. His job was putting matches together with a specialty on tag teams and elevating smaller talent.

There is no word if the 58 year old Malenko will continue to pursue a career in pro wrestling. With All Elite Wresting (AEW) getting ready for their first show Double Or Nothing on May 25, he is someone the upstart promotion could very well try to sign for a backstage job.

– Speaking of AEW, we know Dustin Rhodes (Goldust to WWE fans) will challenge his brother Cody Rhodes at their first show. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that Dustin asked for his release on January 19 and it was granted with a 90 no compete clause.

Vince McMahon reportedly did not want Dustin leaving, but Triple H convinced WWE’s CEO to grant the release. As for Dustin’s future, he has stated in the past that his time being an active wrestler inside the ring is coming to a close. While he could retire next month, Dustin has plenty of experience working backstage and that could be used for a future role with AEW.
