On Wednesday, Meghan Markle broke royal protocol by having a star-studded baby shower in New York City with her many celebrity friends, but some noticed right away that her sister-in-law Kate Middleton was not in attendance. Now, the reasons behind her absence have been revealed.

Fox News reported that the biggest reason that Kate did not attend the shower is that having one is a blatant violation of royal protocol. Since the entire point of a baby shower is for a mother-to-be to be given gifts for her child that she might not be able to get herself, members of the British royal family view it as highly inappropriate for them to hold one for themselves.

Royal expert Victoria Arbiter explained that it’s “added pressure that they are clearly very wealthy, and a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate. There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves.”

The other reason Kate did not attend the shower may be because she is currently on a secret ski trip with her husband Prince William and their three children. A royal source said that the children are off from school, so William and Kate decided to fly off to their favorite ski resort, the Courchevel in the Troi Vallees in France.

Kate and Meghan are rumored to not get along

Furthermore, attending the baby shower may not have been a priority for Kate since she and Meghan are rumored to simply not be close. Ever since Meghan joined the royal family, rumors have run rampant that the two aren’t exactly close friends, so Kate likely felt no qualms about going skiing rather than attending the shower.

Meghan’s baby shower was held in New York City at The Mark Hotel, and it was thrown for her by her best friends, tennis player Serena Williams and stylist Jessica Mulroney. Many of her A-list friends were in attendance, including Gayle King, Priyanka Chopra, and Amal Clooney.

“The trip is a lovely chance to catch up with friends and spend time in a city she loves,” a source said. “This will be the last time a lot of them will see Meg until after the baby is born so it’s nice to share precious moments. It’s been a relaxing visit. Nothing beats face time with your friends. Meg will be flying home refreshed and relaxed — and with a lot of new baby clothes.”

While holding a baby shower is certainly fun for any mother-to-be, it would be nice if Meghan also started paying more attention to following royal protocol. The Royals have a very good reason to dislike holding baby showers, and Meghan did, after all, choose to marry into this family knowing that she would need to follow an unusual set of rules at times. Partying with A-list stars is clearly too tempting for Meghan to say no to, but hopefully, she does decide to forgo a baby shower with her second child in solidarity with the royal family.
