It’s tough being a former champ, and that’s probably especially true if you’re Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
The former queen of the strawweight division put the new weight class on the map, and beat nearly everyone put before her. She also got to be the center of the UFC universe – or at least a part of it – and entire cards were erected around her fights.
Now, she’s offered match-ups, and after she agrees to them, they get snatched away and given to others.
In case you didn’t know, the UFC was struggling to find a title fight for UFC 230, and nothing was coming together for the Madison Square Garden show. Jedrzejczyk, meanwhile, was supposedly going to take on Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title at UFC 231. Then came the ol’ switcheroo, and now Shevchenko will scrap against Sijara Eubanks for that belt. Where does that leave the former strawweight champ?
In the cold, apparently.
And she’s a little peeved about it. As per an Instagram post:
Was Jedrzejczyk screwed by the UFC here? Well, it would appear so… although you also have to take into consideration that at the end of the day the UFC has a promotion to run. Ultimately, it’s more important that New York gets their big annual event (for reasons such as market control and sponsorship presence – you know, business).
It sucks for Jedrzejczyk, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
