When Melissa Schlag decided to kneel while the Pledge of Allegiance was recited at a Board of Selectmen’s meeting, she created a big backlash in her Connecticut town. The Selectwoman’s announcement that she will kneel until President Trump is out of office propelled a lot of people to speak out against her including Vietnam Veteran Calvin Bunnell who laid into Schlag in epic fashion.
Schlag was also caught on audio stating that the people she represents are “fascist and racist.” Donald Trump won Haddam with 51 percent of the vote. Like many liberals today, Schlag believes those she disagrees with should be smeared. But, Bunnell wasn’t having it.
He drove in from a nearby town because he knew that Schlag would be kneeling again. As a veteran, he takes this disrespectful action very seriously. Many people have died to protect her rights and she is basically turning her back on those sacrifices.
About 75 people showed up to give Schlag a piece of their mind, but Bunnell’s voice was the fiercest. He told the her that if she doesn’t like our country that she should leave!
“As it says on my shirt, ‘If you don’t like this flag, I’ll help you pack your bags and get the heck out of here.’ When you kneeled and turned your back on this flag, you turned your back on half of this town,” the Vietnam Veteran said to the kneeling elected official.
When asked by Fox News why he is so upset, Bunnell made it clear that he takes this very personally.
“Because to me, the flag is supposed to represent the United States, and when somebody kneels down and does not respect it, it goes along with the national anthem. You’re supposed to stand up and present yourself to that situation as well as the flag. When I first went into elementary school, it was the first thing they taught us, was respect for the flag and what it stood for,” he said. “It just doesn’t stand for freedom, but it also stands for all the gentlemen, ladies in the service that have been killed in the line of duty. And when somebody kneels down in front of it, for me, it’s a very disrespectful thing because, for me, you should stand up and praise these people as well as that flag of the United States.”
He’s completely right. It is disrespectful! This woman not only spits on the sacrifices of our soldiers, but she also took direct aim at the very people who elected her as a Selectwoman! Hopefully, this will be her last term in office!

He wasn’t the only one to give Schlag a piece of his mind. While holding an American flag Haddam resident Pablo Arroyo told her that she has no business doing this in an official meeting.
“I wholeheartedly respect your right to protest, to take a knee, to lay down, to burn the flag, to do whatever it is . . . but if that’s what you would like to do, do that on your own time,” Arroyo said.
Freedom isn’t free. Many sacrifices have been made for it. People like Melissa Schlag should understand that and stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem!
