Rebuttal: Brock Lesnar Is A Money-Grubbing Huckster Who Hates The Fans

While I have nothing but respect for my colleague Jack, I did feel like putting my two cents in on his latest article. I agree Brock Lesnar is at the top of his game when it comes to business acumen; I don’t agree when it comes down to his performance as an athlete. Here is my point-of-view on Brock Lesnar and where he is at in his career.

Businessman vs. Athlete

In my opinion, Brock Lesnar is not at the top of his game as an athlete. He is at the top of his game as a businessman, but that is where the praise ends for me. Lesnar is clear about the fact that a payday is the main thing he is after at the moment.

The bidding wars between Vince McMahon and Dana White is a prime example of why Lesnar is a better businessman than an athlete. However, I do not see what the fuss is about, other than his recognizable name.

Imagine any upcoming wrestler putting down the same pay-per-view performance as Brock Lesnar. It would literally break their career, yet Lesnar gets away with it time and time again. Poor matches and poor attendance, while being overpaid. Does nobody see how ludicrous this is?

Doesn’t Lesnar Have Veteran Status?

I have no problems with veterans; I have nothing but respect for the Undertaker, who always tries to put on a fantastic show, even though he believes he should be retired by now. His main concerns has always been the fans, not a paycheck; this is what sets a veteran like Taker apart from Brock Lesnar.

Then there is the matter of steroid abuse, which has been circling Lesnar like a hungry shark. He was punished for the use of illegal substances at the UFC but just returned to the WWE with zero repercussions. As the WWE tells it, Lesnar is only a part-timer, which is a loophole for illegal substance abuse. Gimme a break!

When it comes from the fans’ point-of-view, Lesnar is far from the top of his game. He has no problems picking up his paycheck, but putting on a decent show for fans is far from his agenda.

Look, as a businessman, I can understand why Lesnar does what he does. Props where props are due, the man has built a successful brand. However, every athlete draws respect from their crowd. If you would ask most WWE fans if they respect Brock Lesnar as an athlete, the answer would probably be no. If you ask them if they respect him as a businessman, the answer could be yes.

In conclusion, I think it is important to separate Brock Lesnar’s success as a businessman and his success as an athlete. The Brock Lesnar that impressed management in the early 2000’s is long gone. His focus lies on securing his financial future. While you cannot blame him for that, I think it is wrong to give him a stranglehold on the WWE Universal Championship.
