Why 7-Year-Old Cake Was Consumed At Prince Louis’ Baptism

The Royal Family gathered at Chapel Royal at St. James Palace in London to celebrate the baptism of Prince Louis yesterday. This also gave royal watchers the opportunity to see how much Kate Middleton and Prince William’s youngest son has grown.

Like many royal events, Prince Louis’ baptism was steeped in tradition. He wore the same gown that his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte wore during their baptisms. It is a replica of a gown that had been used for royal baptisms since Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter wore it. The original Honiton lace gown was used until Lady Louise’s baptism in 2004. It was deemed too fragile to be worn again and is now stored in the royal archives. Prince Louis was the eighth Royal baby to don this intricate lace and satin replica gown.

While Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were noticeably missed, the rest of the family was there to watch Prince Louis become a member of the Church of England. Kensington Palace tweeted a video of the arrival. The joy on Kate Middleton’s face is unmistakable. She is so proud to be showing off her son and celebrating their Christian faith.

William and Kate served seven-year-old cake to guests at the reception. This might sound unusual, but this is another Royal tradition. It was leftovers from their wedding cake. Much like many brides and grooms who freeze their wedding cake for future commemoration, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge served cake from their nuptials. It was also served at Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s baptisms. However, there hasn’t been any word on how the cake tasted after being stored for so long.

This was the first time Prince Louis has been seen in public since his photo-op outside the hospital the day he was born. Hopefully, now that his baptism is over, we will be seeing more of this adorable prince! Pictures from Prince Louis’s baptism can be seen in the video below.
