Christians know that the power of prayer can save lives and one Missouri teen is evidence of this.
John Smith was “messing around” with friends on the ice covering Lake Sainte Louise in Missouri. The ice cracked and the boys fell in. While his friends were able to get out, 14-year-old Smith was trapped beneath the frigid water for over 15 minutes before rescue arrived.
John’s mom Joyce was so shocked that she doesn’t remember how she got to the hospital. Medical staff had already been performing CPR on John for a half hour when she arrived. They were about to call the time of death when the mother came into the room.
The Smiths had waited 17 years to adopt John. His mother wasn’t about to give up. She sought help from God.
“After I entered his room, I put my hands on his feet, and they were cold and grey, and I just knew he was gone,” Joyce recalled. “I began praying out loud, begging God for my son’s life, and calling on the Holy Spirit, saying, ‘Please give me back my son.'”
As she began praying over her son, it was evident to people in the room that God was listening to her.
“The nurse had her finger on John’s pulse for 27 minutes, and had gotten nothing,” the mother said. “She told me, ‘The minute you prayed, something moved up John’s body with such force, it pushed me back — and suddenly, I got a pulse.’ They were stunned.”
Even though John was alive, doctors told Joyce that he was likely to be a vegetable and brain scans confirmed this prognosis. Joyce refused to believe that and again put her faith in God.
Joyce said, “I told him, ‘Do your best. God will do the rest, but I want no negatives to be spoken around him. When you are in the room, I only want him to hear positive things.'”
Two days later, John woke up talking. He was discharged a couple of weeks later. Even the medical staff believe this was a miraculous recovery, unlike anything they had previously witnessed.

Prayer can save lives. John Smith is evidence of this! It is hard to deny it as even the medical staff have no other explanation for why he survived and thrived.
“We’re not the answer — God’s the answer,” John said. “We’re just sharing the story so this country will see how great our God is. He’s not dead, He’s alive, and He’s still in the miracle-working business. I’m blown away by how great He is.”
