In the liberal world of Hollywood, it’s rare to find any actor who is brave enough to speak out and defend a conservative cause. That’s why it came as a welcome surprise this week when Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey spoke out to defy Hollywood by defending gun rights.

Breitbart reported that though McConaughey said that he does support some gun control but he also has misgivings about the March For Our Lives movement. He fears these activists want guns to be banned altogether in the United States. While promoting his upcoming film, “White Boy Rick,” McConaughey refused to vilify gun owners and the NRA, instead, talking about his own personal history with guns.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who are gun owners. I’ve got a lot of friends who are NRA (National Rifle Association). I grew up hunting. We had responsible gun ownership, but I was taught the right way to respect that tool,” he said. “At the same time, their petition that they were speaking about is a very good one. And I also fear that their campaign — they have to watch that they don’t get hijacked. Meaning, a lot of the crowd was for no guns at all. That was not the march for life. March for Our Lives was for rightful, just, responsible gun ownership — but against assault rifles, against unlimited magazines and for following up on the regulations.”

McConaughey went on to say that he wants to see the anti-gun activists and the NRA find some sort of common ground.

“The two sides (have) got to talk. Because we both agree that there’s an epidemic. We both agree something has got to change,” he said. “So I was for what they were marching for, and I wanted to speak to my hometown on the capital of my state Texas’ steps. And also talk to the many men and women who I grew up with, I know that had the guns, that owned the guns, and say hey, do we really, where can we reach across the aisle here? Find a compromise for the betterment of all of us?”

McConaughey is essentially a firm believer in the Second Amendment and also believes in the importance of responsible gun ownership. While he supports gun rights, he also knows that people who own firearms need to be responsible and know how to use them. What McConaughey had to say here is in stark contrast to what much of the rest of Hollywood has been saying the past few months. Liberal entertainers have gone around preaching against the Second Amendment while simultaneously making millions starring in shoot-em-up movies. It’s this kind of hypocrisy that has caused so many Americans to turn their back on Hollywood, which is why it’s so refreshing to see a star like McConaughey actually say something intelligent on this subject.
