Here’s What Happened When Schools Did Away With Shooting Clubs

Much has changed over time. While more than 100,000 students walked out of school to support gun control, it wasn’t that long ago that students went to school with firearms. At one time, even New York City Public High Schools actually had gun ranges on campus.

Shooting was not just an activity for boys. Below is a picture of the 1931 girls’ rifle team outside Huntington (NY) High School.

“It was common for high school students to take their guns with them to school on the subways in the morning and turn them over to their homeroom teacher or the gym coach so the heavy guns would simply be out of the way. After school, students would pick up their guns when it was time for practice,” Second Amendment advocate John Lott Jr. wrote in his book, “The Bias Against Guns.

He also wrote, “Even in New York City, virtually every public high school had a shooting club up until 1969.” A picture of a rifle range at Far Rockaway HS in Queens is below. This range was closed in 2011. It had at least five windows to shoot from.

Isn’t it ironic that when shooting clubs and gun ranges were removed from schools, shootings increased? When teens are appropriately taught about guns, they respect them. If education is the key, why aren’t students being properly taught about their Second Amendment rights? This is clearly defined in the Bill of Rights, yet it is a right that is attacked regularly in American schools.

In addition to learning how to protect themselves, students could acquire appropriate shooting practice before joining the military or pursuing a career in law enforcement.

This is evidence as to how quickly things can change for the worse. Leftists have been working hard to indoctrinate children in our schools for decades. In less than 50 years, kids went from taking firearms to school for educational purposes to protesting them.

The New York Department of Education is not aware of how many shooting clubs or ranges were in its high schools over the years or even when they were shut down. They did say there were at least three ranges on high school campuses at one time. The DOE also stated the shooting clubs were shut down and the ranges were repurposed for other activities.
