Two pictures of the same street have many people believing they were taken from different angles, but they aren’t. The optical illusion in these pictures has a lot of folks scratching their heads. It’s so unusual that it’s causing a lot of online chatter.

The pictures were uploaded to Imgur and have been viewed over 1 million times because it’s so confusing. Reddit users then quickly joined in on the debate over what was going on.

The pictures are actually exactly the same, but when they are put side by side they look like they are taken at different angles.

“For me it looks like the roads are going in different directions, like one road forking off. It’s hard to believe the two streets are actually parallel,” a Reddit user named Jerry Disco wrote.

Another person commented, “I can tell that it’s the same picture, but something makes my brain not want to believe it.”

The illusion makes it hard to believe the side by side pictures are actually parallel. Check out the photos below to see if you notice the illusion, or see it correctly.

Someone suggested that he knows why the pictures look different, even though they are the same. “It’s because the two streets come together at the bottom of the pictures,” he said. “Your brain tries to perceive this as one image with a fork in the road and therefore the street in the picture on the left must be at a different angle than the picture on the right.”

That does make sense. When you look at the left and right pictures when they are placed vertically, with one above the other, it’s clear they are the same picture and angle.

Placing them side by side caused the illusion. Very weird! I would have never figured out this illusion had it not been explained to me.
