Steve Irwin animal

Steve Irwin was rather fearless. The Crocodile Hunter put himself in dangerous situations on a daily basis, but there was one animal that he refused to tangle with – the hippo. He understood the hippo’s power and he respected it.

‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin Hippos

That was evident when Steve was on the Luangwa River in Zambia. He encountered a herd of hippos.

Two male hippos were fighting when one looked at Steve. He quickly asked to get out of that situation.

Steve Irwin has wrestled crocodiles and held deadly snakes but he wasn’t getting close to those hippos!

“Hey, I don’t want anything to do with this, guys!” Steve told his crew in the video below from 2001.

As his wife Terri pointed out in the video, hippos are incredibly territorial and get agitated very easily, particularly when they are with other hippos. Steve was wise to hightail it out of there!

Steve Irwin’s Unexpected Nemesis – Parrots

There was another animal that Steve didn’t get the warm and fuzzies from – parrots.

“The only animals I’m not comfortable with are parrots, but I’m learning as I go. I’m getting better and better at ’em. I really am. For some reason, parrots have to bite me,” the Crocodile Hunter said. “That’s their job. I don’t know why that is. They’ve nearly torn my nose off. I’ve had some really bad parrot bites.”

There were few animals that Steve didn’t engage in some manner. The hippo was obviously one of those animals that Steve Irwin knew he needed to keep his distance from when he was near them.

I’ll never forget the shock of learning that Irwin was killed by a stingray in 2006. This man had wrestled crocodiles and handled some of the world’s deadliest snakes. Nobody ever expected a stingray to cost him his life.
