Unsurprisingly, when the match was made official the internet basically collectively lost its mind.
Even Omega’s Bullet Club teammates seem to approve:
At a press conference Monday morning, Omega said he believes “everyone [in WWE] is so below me,” and that’s why Jericho is coming to face him in Japan.
He also explained that, while it was once his goal to end his career in WWE the same way that Jericho did, that’s not his goal anymore. Instead, he wants to help NJPW expand into America:
“There’s a ceiling here. You can only get so famous. Pro wrestling can only get so popular. My dream is to break that ceiling. It always has been.” He continued, “Are we only big in Japan now? No. Everyone knows who we are. Everyone knows New Japan, but there’s still that ceiling. There’s still the image that we can never compete. Watch me compete.”
As for Jericho, it’s unclear what this means for his future with WWE. He’s technically a free agent, and his last appearance with the company was on July 25, when he made a surprise return to SmackDown and competed in a triple threat match for the United States Championship against Kevin Owens and AJ Styles. Given that WWE recently fired someone simply for taking a photo with Bullet Club, will Jericho ever be allowed in a WWE ring again now that he’s competing at NJPW’s version of WrestleMania?
The optimist in me is hoping that this match could somehow mend the ongoing war between WWE and Bullet Club, but that might be wishful thinking. Whatever happens, though, I’m sure it’ll be worth it.
