Chester Bennington suicide

The music world was rocked in July when Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park, committed suicide in his California home. The father of six had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, likely fueled by his depression.

Many people expect that someone has to be solemn and visibly depressed in order to take their own life. That is simply not the case. People put forth an effort to be happy and can actually have some good times while facing depression, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still there.

Chester’s wife proved that when she took to Twitter to show what depression looked like to her family just 36 hours prior to her husband’s death. She did this to raise awareness for National Suicide Prevention Week.

Chester was playing a jellybean tasting game with his family. The singer appeared upbeat and was having fun. He was smiling and laughing. This is not the expectation that many have for someone who is about to take their own life. But, this is often the reality. Talinda Bennington perfected the video by saying depression doesn’t have a face or a mood.

Chester’s son Draven also recorded a video for National Suicide Prevention Week. As Linkin Park’s song “Numb” plays, Draven promises to speak with someone if he is feeling depressed. He challenges viewers to do the same. This is a child who clearly misses his father and doesn’t want anyone else to suffer the same fate. That video is below.

As a child, Bennington was abused by an older man. This abuse haunted him for years. It began when Chester was seven and continued for six long years. This left him vulnerable and depressed.

Depression impacts millions of people, and Chester’s family is committed to raising awareness so that other families do not have to go through the pain they have experienced.

If you know someone that is suffering from depression, share this story so they know there is help out there for them!
