Rory MacDonald has long been considered one of the toughest and most game fighters in MMA, and this past weekend, the UFC vet showcased that once again.
First off, at Bellator 179 on Friday, MacDonald dominated Paul Daley en route to a submission win. “The Red King” put his wrestling and top game to work, and finished the feared striker with a second round, rear-naked-choke.
It doesn’t end there. After the card, while taking to the media, MacDonald had this to say about his hopes for the future (quote via Champions):
“I want to be a champion, a two-division champion if I can,” MacDonald said. “Outside of that, I want the big fights. If I can fight the legendary fighters that are around and in Bellator then sign me up. I think they will be fan friendly fights. A young up and coming champions fighting legends—I think that sells. Fedor, Wanderlei, those are big guys and I think fans would want to see that.”
Would fans want to see MacDonald fight Silva or Fedor? Of course. Could it happen? That’s another question. MacDonald has talked about fighting at 185, so, considering Silva’s been fighting at 205 more recently, that bout could happen. But Fedor?
Obviously MacDonald would have to put on a lot of weight before facing the legendary heavyweight. So, that bout seems far less likely. But, you know MacDonald would do it, if he was actually offered the fight. Which, as noted above, shows you how ridiculously tough the Canadian star is.
For the short term, however, it’s going to be interesting to see MacDonald challenge for the Bellator 170 title. The current champ Douglas Lima will take on Lorenz Larkin, June 24th.
