Texas School District Wages War on Christianity and Charlie Brown!

The War on Christmas has gone to an unlikely place – Texas.

The Killeen Independent School District ordered school nurse Dedra Shannon to remove her posters of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Shannon loves the simplicity of the holiday classic so she put up a poster of the door to the nurse’s office.

Two days later she got a visit from the principal. She was told it was an issue of “separation of church and state” and that she could keep up the picture of Linus but needed to remove Linus’ quote, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior which is Christ the Lord. That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Shannon was indeed offended saying, “It is a slap in the face of Christianity.” She also pointed out that diversity and different points of thought are promoted throughout Patterson Middle School but apparently Christianity isn’t welcome.

“Throughout the school there are talks about diversity. Well, you aren’t being very diverse if you are not allowing the Christians to put something up that refers to a Christian holiday,” she said.

The State of Texas ended up getting involved, but the school district is continuing to stand firm against allowing students to know what the federal holiday is all about. From PJ Media:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton would not let this stand, however. He accused the Killeen Independent School District of violating the state’s Merry Christmas Law. That law, passed in 2013, ensures that no school official in Texas can silence a biblical reference to Christmas.

“We passed that law precisely because of this type of discrimination against people of faith,” Paxton told Starnes. “This is an attack on religious liberty and a violation of the First Amendment and state law.”

The school district was unmoved by his arguments, however. “Our employees are free to celebrate the Christmas and Holiday season in the manner of their choosing. However, employees are not permitted to impose their personal beliefs on students,” the district wrote in a statement.

In this era of diversity, where it’s encouraged to learn about other cultures and religions to better appreciate our difference, this is a rather hypocritical stance. It’s as if they want all religions to be understood and appreciated – all religions except Christianity.
