Fans of the hit show Yellowstone have been nervous about how the show will end in the wake of star Kevin Costner announcing that he would not return to film the second half of the fifth and final season.
With the final episodes set to premiere on November 10 on The Paramount Network, the Yellowstone cast is putting these fears to rest by teasing the show’s “perfect ending.”
Final Episodes Of Yellowstone
Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone tells the story of the Dutton family. Costner, 69, played the family patriarch John Dutton, the head of a Montana ranching dynasty. However, Costner announced earlier this year that he would not be filming the show’s final six episodes because of scheduling conflicts with his four-part western movie series Horizon: An American Saga.
Thankfully, Costner’s absence doesn’t seem to have had too negative of an impact on the Yellowstone ending.
“I read the last episode the day before we started filming,” Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, told Entertainment Weekly. “I couldn’t be happier…I think it’s a perfect ending for the show for every character. It’s just a testament to what a good writer Taylor is, and it’s a very, very profound, beautiful ending. I can’t wait to sit down and watch it one day.”
Yellowstone executive producer David Glasser explained that Sheridan had known how the show would end from the very beginning.
“Day one, episode one, Taylor said, ‘I know exactly how this ends,’” Glasser said.

Kelly Reilly Speaks Out
Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, was quick to back this up.
“He told me the ending of the show when we were filming Season 1,” Reilly said. “It was always going to be five seasons in [Taylor’s] head, but because the show became so successful, the network and everyone wanted more.”
Reilly went on to seemingly allude to Costner’s absence from the final Yellowstone episodes.
“So, in a way, fate took it and we ended this part of Yellowstone in a way that he always envisioned it to end,” she said. “It changes nothing as far as Beth’s desire to protect her family’s lineage. In fact it becomes more urgent.”
While details about what will happen in the finale have not been released, it appears that there will be some surprises in it.
“If you think you know what’s going to happen, Taylor will always give you a surprise that you didn’t see coming,” Glasser warned.
Costner Leaves Yellowstone
Costner had previously claimed to Fox News that he was “offered” to do season six, but it was “complicated.” Ultimately, negotiations broke down between him and show executives.
“We did negotiate,” he explained. “There were issues about creative. I tried to break the logjam. They walked away.”
Costner announced his official exit from Yellowstone back in June. He dropped this bomb in a video posted to Instagram.
“I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love,” Costner said. “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future.”
While it’s hard to imagine Yellowstone without Costner, it will certainly be interesting to see how the show ends. We can’t wait to see what goes down in the final episodes come November!
