The long wait is almost over. One of the highly anticipated TV shows of 2025 finally has a premiere date set, and fans are on the edge of their seats in anticipation.
The Emmy-winning video game adaptation is set to return to HBO this spring and stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The Last of Us season 2 premiere is only a couple of months away now, so it’s time to break out the tissues and popcorn for this crazy ride.
The premiere will come two years after the finale of the first season. To no surprise, the season was one of HBO’s biggest since the end of Game of Thrones. The finale alone drew in 8.2 million viewers.
The post-apocalyptic drama series will once again focus on the iconic duo of Joel and Ellie but is set five years after the events of the first season. Those who have experienced the video game know what’s in store. For those who are fresh into the story, things are about to get rocky.

The Last of Us Season 2 Premiere
It’s been confirmed that The Last of Us season 2 will debut Sunday, April 13th, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. The season will consist of seven episodes.
The second season will be set five years after the last episode in season one. Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and the world, which is even more dangerous and unpredictable than before.

At the start of the second game, players find Joel and Ellie living in Jackson, a community of survivors they visited during the first season where Joel found his brother. The game also saw players controlling Ellie rather than Joel, as well as a new character entirely, Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
Character posters for the three main characters were released as well with he same tease line: “Every path has a price,” along with an icon of each character. Joel features his broken watch, Ellie stands on the neck of her guitar, and Abby stands on a Firefly pendant.
Looking Into the Future
The first season follows the first game closely, and we’re expecting the same to happen for the second season. But what about the future? Will there be more than two seasons since there are only two games?
Gamers will be excited to know that Naughty Dog, the creators of The Last of Us, is working on a third game. Neil Druckmann, the creator of the game, discussed during a panel at DICE that there are still problems to be resolved in the series. And if there’s a third game, then there’s a high chance season three is in the works for the future.
