Meghan McCain is nothing if not a proud Arizonan and she clearly takes personally any slights against the Grand Canyon State. She took to Twitter as details surrounding a college entrance scandal emerged that included “Fuller House” actress Lori Loughlin’s husband, Mossimo Gianulli, slamming Arizona State University.
“To Aunt Becky’s husband who talked shit about ASU – The @McCainInstitute for International Leadership does incredible work w/ students in cooperation with ASU, “McCain tweeted, “and I guarantee those students involved will go on to do great things in the world and didn’t have to lie to get there…”
McCain’s tweet was in response to an email Mossimo Gianulli, the Target t-shirt mogel, wrote in 2016 to the alleged college fraud mastermind William Singer.
“We just met with [our older daughter’s] college counselor this am,” Gianulli wrote. “I’d like to maybe sit with you after your session with the girls as I have some concerns and want to fully understand the game plan and make sure we have a roadmap for success as it relates to [our daughter] and getting her into a school other than ASU!”
Loughlin and Gianulli reportedly spent a combined $500,000 to get their two daughters accepted at the University of Southern California. One of their daughters is a social media influencer who actually posted that her interests in college were partying and game-day related activities and had nothing to do with academics.
Is ASU still a “party school”?
Arizona State University has come a long way since it was coined as the nation’s party school. In 2009, it was 6th in “Party School” rankings but has since dropped off the lists completely. A welcome change for those running and attending the school.
While the school still accepts high school students with a B average and college kids are going to party no matter what school they go to, ASU has ranked as the top university in innovation by U.S. News and World Report for the last four years. This means it beats out innovation hot spots like Georgia State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Stanford University.
Mossimo Gianulli’s distasteful smear of ASU is certainly undeserved in 2019. McCain‘s defense is a much more modern view on a school that turns out educated adults who actually want to learn something. Loughlin and Gianulli’s daughters could’ve done a lot worse — and likely deserved worse — than ASU, and an apology to the university would probably go a long way during the family’s legal and PR nightmare.
