Over the past few months, Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has hinted at various times that he may be getting involved in politics sometime in the future.
In a new interview this week, he confirmed that running for the governor of Texas position could be a possibility. The Texas gubernatorial election is set for November 8, 2022.

McConaughey Considering Running For Texas Governor
While appearing on “The Balanced Voice,” Texas native McConaughey was asked directly if he is thinking about running for Texas governor, and he replied, “It’s a true consideration.”
The 51-year-old Hollywood star was then asked how he would carry on lessons he’s learned in life through the next generation.
I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role?” said McConaughey. “Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?”
He recently released a book in October called “Greenlights” which includes insights and observations from his life.
McConaughey’s Previous Comments About Politics
McConaughey’s latest comments on a Texas gubernatorial run are starkly different than the ones he made when he was asked by late night host Stephen Colbert in November if he was thinking about getting involved in politics.
“I have no plans to do that right now,” McConaughey replied. “Right now? No. I don’t get politics. Politics seems to be a broken business. Politics needs to redefine its purpose.”
“As I move forward in life, yes, am I going to consider leadership roles where I can be most useful? I’d love to. I’m doing that regardless,” he added at the time. “That’s where I sit right now.”
Take a look at the exchanged between Colbert and McConaughey:
McConaughey Focused On Being A Dad
While a Texas gubernatorial run may be in his future, McConaughey said on “The Balanced Voice” that right now, the biggest leadership role that he’s focused on is that of being a father.
“I have three epics in my life, and that’s my three children. That’s the greatest light or shadow that Camila [Alves] and I can leave, the greatest shadow I can leave as a father,” he said.
“How can I be the best dad for them — not the time to be their best friend — but he best dad to them right now, to help them get out and negotiate and be autonomous, confident, and conscientious people in the world, to get out there and navigate?”

McConaughey Rips Cancel Culture
McConaughey has previously indicated that politically, he’s a moderate. And he’s not afraid to criticize the radical left.
In December, he publicly disavowed radical liberals who drive cancel culture and “completely illegitimize” conservatives.
“You need liberals, what I don’t think we need is the illiberals and what I don’t think that some liberals see is that they’re often being cannibalized by the illiberals,” McConaughey explained. “The extreme left and the extreme right completely illegitimize the other side, the liberal and the conservative side which we need in certain places.”
“The two extremes illegitimize those two sides, or they exaggerate that side’s stance into an irrational state that makes no sense – and that’s not fair when either side does that,” he added.

McConaughey has long shown that unlike many Hollywood stars, he actually has a good head on his shoulders when it comes to politics.
While we would certainly like to hear more about his political views on specific issues, it seems like the people of Texas may be lucky to have him as their governor someday!
