Jay Thomas of Cheers and Murphy Brown has passed away following a battle with cancer. The comedic actor was 69 years old.

Thomas portrayed Rhea Pearlman’s husband Boston Bruins goalie Eddie LeBec on Cheers. Fans will remember that Eddie was killed by a Zamboni in an ice show.

On Murphy Brown, Thomas played Jerry Gold, an obnoxious talk show host who dated Candice Bergen. He won two Emmys for his performances on that series.

Thomas was also a regular guest on David Letterman’s Christmas show. He and Letterman threw around a football to knock a meatball out of a Christmas tree. But, Thomas’ most memorable Christmas appearance with Letterman was when Thomas told a story about the Lone Ranger getting him out of a pickle during a traffic jam, which you can see in the tweeted video below.

Jay Thomas got his first real break playing Remo DaVinci on Mork and Mindy.

Thomas is survived by his wife Sally and three sons, who could use our prayers.
